Pōkaʻi Bay is the consensus family pick on the west side. A long breakwater on the south side cuts incoming swell, so the inner bay stays calm year-round. Wide sand, gentle entry, real lifeguard tower, and a community-park feel. Worth the drive from Honolulu if you want a low-tourist family beach day.
Less touristy than Ko Olina — feels like a community beach. Locals show up early on weekends with full picnic setups. Bring everything; west-side amenities are limited compared to town. Combine with a stop at Kahumana Café or one of the Waiʻanae food trucks.
Lifeguarded. The breakwater channel at the south end has stronger current — keep kids on the inner-bay side. Generally a safe family swim.

Public restrooms at the park.
Big monkeypod trees behind the beach.
Morning before trade winds. Avoid the height of west-swell winter days for the calmest water.
Accessibility: Paved park area; sand access has a short drop.
Four man-made resort lagoons on the west coast — glass-calm water, easy access, the safest family-swim option on Oʻahu.
Long west-side beach with shifting conditions — calm summer, lively winter, full park facilities.
Wide west-side community park — summer calm, full facilities, less crowded than Pōkaʻi.
